Signage is often one of the last packages brought into a development. By then, the façade is resolved, power locations are fixed and access is becoming more difficult.
That is when a straightforward signage package can turn into redesign, rework and unnecessary cost. The best outcomes start earlier, alongside the architecture, structure and services, not once everything else is locked in.

Bring signage into the conversation while there is still time to coordinate structure, power, access and approvals. Early decisions protect the design intent and make installation considerably simpler.

01. Start with the design documentation
Signage should not sit in a separate file that nobody opens until practical completion is approaching. Its locations, scale and servicing requirements need to be visible in the architectural and façade documentation from the outset.
For larger developments, we recommend a coordinated signage schedule that records each sign type, location, size, finish, illumination and fixing approach. It gives the architect, builder, services consultants and signage team one source of truth, and makes changes much easier to manage.
Before the design is signed off
- Confirm every proposed sign location and its sightlines.
- Allow for backing, subframes and penetrations.
- Nominate power, cable routes and driver locations.
- Check access for installation and future maintenance.
02. Design the structure, not just the sign
A finished sign can look simple while concealing a considerable amount of engineering. Fabricated letters, lightboxes, projecting signs and large façade elements all introduce dead load, wind load and movement that the supporting structure must accommodate.
The right fixing method depends on the sign, its height and exposure, and what sits behind the finished surface. Concrete, structural steel, curtain wall and lightweight cladding each require a different approach. Where engineering certification is required, it should inform the design early rather than validate a solution after it has already been detailed.
What we see on site: when backing or steelwork has not been allowed for, the choice is usually visible fixings, additional trades or opening up completed work. None of those is the preferred outcome.
03. Coordinate power and maintenance access
Illuminated signage needs more than a power point in roughly the right area. Circuit capacity, cable routes, isolation, driver locations, ventilation and weather protection all affect the final result.
Access matters just as much. LED modules and drivers have long service lives, but they are still serviceable components. A clean installation today should not create a difficult or destructive maintenance job later.

04. Resolve compliance before installation
Commercial signage can sit across planning requirements, the National Construction Code, relevant Australian Standards, accessibility provisions and fire or egress requirements. The exact obligations depend on the building, location and sign type.
Statutory and accessible signs are particularly sensitive to wording, contrast, placement, mounting height and tactile or braille requirements. Treating them as a late procurement item risks failed inspections, delayed handover and avoidable replacement work.
A useful rule: if a sign is required for safety, access or approval, confirm the governing requirements before artwork and fabrication begin.
05. Specify materials for the environment
The best material is not simply the one that looks right in a sample. It needs to suit the sign’s location, exposure, expected lifespan and maintenance plan.
Coastal air, direct sun, prevailing weather, impact risk and cleaning regimes can all change the appropriate substrate, coating, print system or illumination method. Aluminium, approved composite products, acrylic, polycarbonate and applied graphics each have useful roles, but they are not interchangeable.
A good specification considers how the sign will look in five or ten years, not only on installation day. Colour retention, corrosion resistance, material compatibility and replaceable components all contribute to whole-of-life value.
06. Make the design buildable and repeatable
Drawings communicate the intent; manufacturing determines whether that intent survives contact with the real world. Tolerances, joins, folds, illumination, transport and site assembly all need to be resolved before production.
This becomes even more important across multiple sites. A clear signage manual, controlled specifications and repeatable production methods keep the brand consistent while still allowing for genuine site differences.
For multi-site programmes
Standardise the details that protect the brand and the build quality. Document where local conditions may require an approved variation. Consistency should be controlled, not assumed.
07. Give signage a real place in the programme
Signage has the same dependencies as any other construction package: design information, approvals, engineering where required, materials, manufacturing time, site readiness and safe access.
Late approvals compress fabrication and push installation into the busiest stage of the project. Clear milestones for shop drawings, approvals, services, access and handover help the signage team coordinate with other trades rather than compete with them.
